Fuel Economy and Wholesale Value: Competing Offers

Published

The short answer

Fuel costs are showing up in what dealers pay at wholesale. Cox Automotive's Q3 2026 Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index report (Oct. 7, 2026) says that since January, non-EVs under 15 MPG lost 15% of their value while 40+ MPG non-EVs gained 9.9%. Cox's Q3 press release adds that large pickups and SUVs absorbed more of the fuel-cost impact, while sustained high gasoline prices supported demand for fuel-efficient vehicles. That is national wholesale data — not your appraisal — but it helps explain why two similar-looking cars can draw different competing offers in Texas right now.

What Cox reported on fuel economy and wholesale

From Cox's Q3 2026 presentation slide “Fuel Economy Is Showing Up in Wholesale Values”:

The same report notes the EV index rose 0.6% in September while the non-EV index fell 1.7% that month. Cox's press release also said diesel days' supply rose to 39 days (27% higher than a year earlier) as diesel prices hit record highs, while EV days' supply declined and values increased.

What Texas pump prices look like this week

The U.S. Energy Information Administration's Texas weekly retail gasoline series (release dated Oct. 14, 2026) put Texas regular at $3.779 for the week of Oct. 12, 2026, down from $3.874 the prior week. That is still well above levels many sellers remember from a few years ago, and Cox has tied elevated fuel costs to weaker wholesale demand for thirstier segments.

None of that is a quote for your VIN. It is context: when gas stays high, wholesale buyers often pay more attention to MPG and segment.

What that means before you take competing offers

Our reading for Texas sellers (not Cox's advice):

How to prepare for the appraisal

  1. Know your payoff if you still owe. Selling with a loan is common; read selling a car with a loan payoff.
  2. Bring service records and be honest about tires, brakes, and warning lights. Cheap fixes before the visit often beat surprises on the lot.
  3. Decide whether you're trading or selling outright. You don't have to buy another vehicle for a dealer to buy yours — see trade-in vs. selling outright.
  4. Expect confirmation after they see the car. First responses typically come the same day, but timing isn't guaranteed, and offers are confirmed after a physical appraisal.

How PriceForMyTrade fits

PriceForMyTrade connects vehicle sellers with local dealerships that compete for the car:

We don't promise an instant valuation or a specific dollar amount based on MPG charts. For East Texas sellers, start at sell my car in East Texas.

Bottom line

Cox's Q3 2026 data shows a clear fuel-economy split in wholesale values: low-MPG non-EVs down sharply since January, high-MPG non-EVs up. Pair that with still-elevated Texas pump prices from EIA, then let several dealers appraise your actual car and compete.
