Do You Keep Your Plates When You Sell to a Texas Dealer?

Published

The short answer

No, if you sell or trade your car to a Texas dealer, the dealer keeps your regular plates. A Texas rule says that when a vehicle is sold to a dealer, the dealer removes and keeps the general-issue license plates and removes the registration sticker (43 Tex. Admin. Code §217.53). Specialty plates are different: you keep those (TxDMV, June 10, 2025).

Why your old habit may not apply

You might remember pulling the plates off before a sale. That habit comes from private sales. A sale to a licensed dealer follows its own rule, which took effect July 1, 2025, along with the change from paper tags to metal plates for dealer sales.

Here is what the rule and TxDMV say happens when the buyer is a dealer:

What happens to the registration you paid for

The time left on your registration doesn't carry over to you or the dealer. Section 502.491(c) says that when you sell a vehicle to a dealer, the remaining registration period expires at the time of the sale. If you paid for more than one year, §502.491(d) says the state may give you credit for the time left, in whole-year amounts. It doesn't promise a refund for a partial year.

A checklist before you hand over the keys

  1. Ask which plates you have. If they're specialty plates, take them off and keep them.
  2. Leave regular plates on. The dealer will remove them.
  3. Clear out the car. Take your toll tag, garage remote and papers. Our guide to clearing personal data before an appraisal covers the rest.
  4. File a transfer notice. TxDMV says a dealer doesn't have to title the car in its own name, so the record can stay in your name until it resells. Our guide to the Vehicle Transfer Notification explains how to protect yourself from later tickets and tolls.
  5. Keep a record. Save the bill of sale or buyer's order with the date and VIN.

How competing offers fit in

The plate question only comes up once you've picked a buyer. How competing offers work explains how several local dealerships can bid on the same car, and trade-in vs. selling outright helps you decide whether to trade in or just sell.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my regular plates on the car I'm buying from the same dealer?

TxDMV says dealers may transfer general-issue plates to another vehicle sold within 10 days if the plates fit that vehicle type. Ask the dealer whether it will move your plates to your new car.

What if I sell to a private buyer instead?

Private sales follow a different process. Check TxDMV's buying or selling a vehicle page for the current steps before you sell.

Bottom line

When you sell or trade to a Texas dealer, leave the regular plates on: the dealer keeps them and removes the sticker. Take specialty plates with you, and file your transfer notice after the sale.
