Clean, Premium-Trim Cars Still Drew Stronger Bids—Shop Competing Offers, Not One “Mainstream” Number

One auction week, two different desks

Black Book’s Market Insights for the week ending September 5, 2026 (published September 8) shows wholesale values still in a seasonal slide—and buyers getting pickier about which cars they will actually bid up.

The overall market declined 0.53% for the week, versus a 0.12% same-week average in 2017–2019. Cars fell 0.69%. Trucks and SUVs fell 0.47%. Auction conversion held at 59%. Liquidity is there. Uniform pricing is not.

Black Book’s analysts said buyers “remained selective, paying stronger prices for desirable, clean-condition inventory while showing less interest in mainstream vehicles.” Lower-mileage, premium-trim units drew stronger bids. 2023 model-year crossovers, sedans, and compact SUVs produced some of the strongest results. Mid-size cars took the hardest weekly hit: 0-to-2-year-old mid-size values dropped 1.65%, and the 2-to-8-year-old band fell 1.07%—both the largest weekly declines in that segment since November 2025.

Older full-size trucks were the exception, not the rule. The 8-to-16-year-old full-size truck band rose 0.27%, while newer full-size trucks fell. Sub-compact crossovers stayed under pressure across every age band.

Why a single trade number misses that split

A used-car manager who is long on mainstream mid-size cars is not looking at the same tape as a desk that needs a clean, well-optioned 2023 crossover. If you accept the first number you hear, you are accepting that store’s inventory problem—not a market average.

PriceForMyTrade helps sellers get competing offers from local dealerships. Competition is handled manually—dealers contact you directly. First responses are often the same day; timing is not guaranteed. Offers are confirmed after a physical appraisal. Dealers can buy outright; you do not have to purchase another vehicle. Submitting a request takes about 30 seconds. That is not an instant valuation, and it is not a promise that an offer arrives in 30 seconds. The service is free to the seller.

What to do before you take a number

Name condition and trim before you talk price. Ask whether the desk is comparing you to a base, high-mile unit or to a clean, optioned comp in the same model year.

Do not let a soft mid-size week talk you out of shopping a cleaner truck—or the reverse. This week’s tape moved in different directions by age and configuration.

Prep the appraisal. Service records, two keys, honest photos, and notes on tires and bodywork reduce the gap between a phone quote and a driveway number.

Selling with a loan, trading, or selling outright are different conversations—see /sell-car-with-loan-payoff, /trade-in-vs-selling-outright, and /how-competing-offers-work. East Texas sellers can start on /sell-my-car-east-texas.

Takeaway: Last week’s wholesale tape still paid more for clean, premium-trim inventory while mainstream mid-size cars slipped harder. Get competing offers so local dealers price your condition—not a blended weekly average.
